Review of Creation (2009) by Tucker B — 24 Jan 2010
The summary is highly misleading; although Darwin's theory provides a backdrop of sorts, science and religion are both peripheral concerns. This movie is really about loss, and about the meaning of suffering (and by extension, meaning in general).
In many ways, I would call it a more personal and less theological Job. What makes this story so compelling -- much like Job's -- is its humility; unnecessary details, plot twists, and characters are omitted, and the camera is often allowed to linger on plain, un-glammified human emotions.
There are a few moments that feel less genuine, but by and large this is a good story, acted and assembled thoughtfully. Jennifer Connelly made me cry.
