Review of Creation (2009) by Steven B — 15 Mar 2010
I have really forward to seeing this and maybe my expectations were too much. I liked the movie because it put a very human face on Charles Darwin and the Publication of 'Origin of Species,' but it also made ole Charlie a bit too 'out of control with grief' for me. There is no doubt the death of his daughter Annie who died (probably of tuberculosis) at age ten was a great blow to him and some feel it was the final straw in his rejection of the idea of a 'kind and loving' god. However the movie makes him seem almost delusional which I doubt.
The movie is based on the book 'Annie's Box' by Randal Keynes, Darwin's great-great-grandson, who has been a life long conservationist and promoter of Darwin's ideas.
Both Paul Bettany and Jennifer Connelly are outstanding and Martha West who plays Annie is a standout.
I guess it was all the sofa people whispering and my own expectations that made this a disappoint experience. The movie had very limited release due to distributor's reluctance to take on churches in the USA, but frankly there wasn't much for them to object to in my opinion.
If you get a chance go see this, it is a good movie no matter what I thought.
