Paul Bettany was very believable in his role of Charles Darwin just after his eldest daughter dies...overwhelmed with grief, Charles retreats within himself while his wife buries herself in her religion. The Origin of Species is probably the most important thing to come out of the scientific community yet its publication would create (even to this day) a whirlwind of controversy because many people feel that Darwin "killed the idea of God".

Science is based upon facts and empirical research. Religion is based upon internal faith and a personal set of laws instilled on people from their family and culture.

Darwin's work set the stage for modern science, gene research, medicine and countless other venues that have improved both the lives of mankind and the flora/fauna that occupy our world.

The problem I had with this movie was Jennifer Connelly (real-life wife of Paul Bettany). Sorry, but I just don't think she carried this well...the emotions were just not there. She seemed like a simmering bitch instead of a deeply-wounded woman trying to keep the family together all on her own after the loss of her eldest daughter. And if she was supposed to be so "religious", why was she not comforted by it??
