Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Fiona B — 13 Nov 2018
If you've read the book, you might be disappointed at how "unlavish" the wealthy lifestyles' are portrayed. It's close but no hand-rolled cigar.
Constance Wu plays the lead Rachel with such low-key energy, that the sense of wonderment or disbelief at this new world around her comes across as bland. Then her designer dress-up to meet the folks sadly sets the near-miss tone. She is dressed in such unflattering colours and shapes that she loses the moment to boring ordinary.
Kevin Kwan created some mind blowing scenes of real money parties, but Jon Chu fails to create the same. I yearned for the wickedly polished and indulgent crowds of.
Baz Leurman's glittering Gatsby scenes. Chu provides nice nights out for rich folk without much lavish. It may seem so at first, but up close it falls away to nothing much.
