Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by B P — 12 Oct 2018
I get the laudable Asian representation, long overdue, but why are we kicking it off with this ode to consumerism? This film is tone-deaf to the ears of American working-poor viewers who are saddled with low wages and debt up to their eyeballs.
Also, it's an entirely patriarchal flick in which the goal of the femininity is a man. The film was entirely regressive for me, and I hope that Asian filmmakers in the future bring us more offerings that speak to more emotionally resonant topics, deeply important to Asian culture.
This was an ode to excess.
