Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Jan P — 09 Sep 2018
They keep removing my review, have NO idea (no spoilers, promise). So I'll try this for a 3rd time.
This is not an unusual rom-com love story. Been done many times before minus the Asian POV. But what really sells it is the visuals.
Specifically, that wedding scene that starts from utter silence to that first note of Elvis, done with such precision & craftsmanship. Honest to God, I was fully immersed.
Hands down, the best wedding I've seen on film & I think demands you take in on the BIG screen as it will lose its impact on home TV.
NO, there is no earth-shattering, serious matter at hand but sometimes an escapist piece of work is in order & this you have here. I do think you will, like me, pretty much know the ending before it almost begins (and yes, like all 80's movies, there must be some dilemma or obstacle to overcome. Heck that goes back to the 50's) but fortunately, it's not cloying or eye-rolling really, it's sweet. This is the kind of breezy movie you will enjoy & not be such a downer, where you are crying for days or deep in thought about its meaning, intent or dilemma. Not this. And that's good. I think you would have to have a cold heart of steel to not enjoy this sweet little film. The actors did fabulously with their work here.
