Review of Crazy Rich Asians (2018) by Ashley H — 31 Aug 2018
Love the idea of the story, the clothes, and some of its cinematic styles but I have to say the story was very off-putting emotionally. I don't usually write reviews, but for something that had such a high rating I need to understand why.
First off, people who date each other know each other's social media account. Lets say she hates the internet or the guy hides his status very well. He's bringing the girl of his dreams to meet his family and he doesn't even tell her anything.
Its absurd seeing as she is chinese and a professor, yet fails to understand chinese family customs and how to speak to her elders (her speech keeps pointing out she's a gold digger, knows nth about her ancestral culture and doesn't even bother to learn).
The guy does nth but apologise and the girl forgives way to easily for someone who is in love. To sum up without spoiling anything (hope I havent yet), the movie felt rushed without emotional buildup to main or supporting characters with reactions that a human being would not have for someone they truly love (esp crazy rich asians).
The only other important character I could connect with in the movie was by michelle yeoh; he character was constant and sensible. The male character didnt do much and the female character is supposed to be smart but she's not.
