Review of Couples Retreat (2009) by Shawn B — 20 Jan 2011
I've read numerous reviews of this film and I have to disagree with almost all of them, especially all of the ones that said it was lacking "the funny." This was one incredibly funny film, but then again, that's just my opinion.
I'm a huge Vince Vaughn fan and will watch anything he's in. Here as Dave, he does not disappoint. He's as sarcastic as ever and provides the dry humor that only he can do so well. Throw in Jason Bateman, as Jason, and Jon Favreau, as Joey, and you've got a match that you can't beat.
Faizon Love, as Shane, also captured my attension in what has to be his breakout comedic role. The ladies of the film are also all very talented, especially Malin Akerman, as Ronnie, Dave's wife! Not only is she absolutely gorgeous, but she holds a special place in my heart after playing Laurie Jupiter in The Watchmen! Kristen Davis of Sex In The CIty fame plays Lucy, Joey's wife, while Kristen Bell plays Cynthia, Jason's wife, who as a couple are on the verge of a divorce.
Those two somehow talk the other three couples to come with them on a relationship building vacation to a beautiful island. These seven very talented actors, along with the two women playing Shane's love interests (Kali Hawk and Tasha Smith) make for a very entertaining group of friends, where at all times, "the funny" is very present! Throw in Jean Reno as the crazy owner / operator of the island and hilarity will and does flow freely.
Maybe everybody should take a vacation like this!
