Review of Country Strong (2010) by Len G — 23 Apr 2011
I really can't think of a Gwyneth Paltrow movie I didn't like...she's easily one of my favorite actresses. So even though the critics hated this film, it should come as no surprise that I liked it. Gwyneth was really great as a fading and troubled country music star. She sang all her own songs as well, perhaps with some coaching from her husband Chris!
The rest of the cast was superb. Tim McGraw was great as Gwyneth's manager/husband trying to hold her career and life together. In fact, I'm starting to think Tim is a better actor than singer (he was great in The Blind Side too).
I didn't know much about Garrett Hedlund or Leighton Meester, but both were great and believable in their roles. Hedlund is a rising star and Leighton Meester is gorgeous!
Country Strong is better than I thought it was going to be. Again, I'm biased in favor of anything Gwyneth does, but I would definitely recommend this movie. If you like Gwyneth check out a few of her lesser known films like Sliding Doors, Possession and Emma -- all great!
