Review of Cosmopolis (2012) by Rhys M — 25 Nov 2012
I appreciate his efforts to make a very talkie talkie, but it all comes off as uncommitted and incredibly pretentious. Eastern Promises is a better, less formal, and far more artistic film by Cronenberg that I would recommend before this one.
Some of the ideas and I-would-barely-call-them-arguments are interesting, but the movie mostly sounds like an old man--wary of taking sides and using only characters to share/skew his views--talk of the young world emerging before him. This many stars because:
1. As usual, his shit's still a step ahead of everyone else.
2. The timeliness made an otherwise boring plot slightly more engaging.
3. Some of this old man's tired, ignorant rant might be right.
