Review of Cosmopolis (2012) by Art S — 25 Jul 2013
During the first few minutes of Cronenberg's filming of Don DeLillo's novel, when Robert Pattinson the young Wall Street billionnaire declares that he wants to get a haircut and promptly gets into his limo (where most of the film is shot), I thought "this is going to be interesting".
Perhaps I was thinking of Holy Motors with its similar limo theme? Because as this film wore on, with its stylized dialogue that occasionally alluded to concepts and theories that made it seem like it might attain a heightened state of cognitive intertwining, it got less coherent and less interesting.
A string of "guest stars" with well-written monologues can spice up a film (and Juliette Binoche, Marcia Gay Harden, and Samantha Morton could do it but not in this movie), but by the time Paul Giamatti showed up, I'd lost my ability to care.
Perhaps no one is expected to care for Robert Pattinson anyway.
