Review of Coraline (2009) by Benjamin K — 10 Jul 2012
If the world was a better place then we would have stop motion films year in year out, it?s a shame they take so damn long to make.
As when they do turn up stop motion is still like nothing else.
Henry Selick the genius who made the masterpiece 'A Nightmare Before Christmas' is back with an adaptation of Neil Gaiman children?s tale, of a little girl who discovers an alternative reality of her life. It seems to have nicer parents and full of wonderful events, including giant circuses and stage shows in the same group of flats that she lives in, but the story has a Roald Dahl twist of be careful what you wish for.
Beautifully made, Stop animation always puts the likes of other animation mediums such as pixal and classic animation to shame, and 'Coraline' is no exception.
With a witty clever script, weird and wonderful characters, though this may in the future not be as highly regarded as 'A Nightmare', it is still brilliantly created and highly recommended.
As a foot note 'Coraline' was one of the big 3D movies of 2009 and although the 3D is ok films of this do not need to be enchanted and works arguably better in the standard 2D.
