Review of Copycat (1995) by John K — 15 Jun 2007
Like the Police song says; "it's murder by numbers, 1,2,3". This movie isn't so simple, but the motivation of the central killer is, or so it seems. He recreates famous crime scenes by murdering and leaving picture perfect copies of famous grisly police photos as created by past serial killers.
Sigourney Weaver is damn good as the agorophobic profiler, but Holly Hunter is too real as the cop in lead of the case. Let me just say here that Holly Hunter is one of those workhorse actors you might characterize as a 'character actor', but her consistant portrayals of multi layers really comes to the fore in this thriller in the genre of Silence of the Lambs. Any actor should see this film just for the nuance of her performance as a teaching tool. Everyone should see it for the subtlety of the story. It doesn't hit you over the head with gore or violence, rather it suggests the darker aspects of serial murderers. Copycat isn't the best of the genre, but it rises above many copycats of it's time. Worth seeing for a good creepout; moreso for the acting.
