Review of Copenhagen (2014) by Nathan M — 26 Jan 2015
One of the better romantic/coming-of-age films of last year (2014), Copenhagen deals with its characters and its delicate subject matter in a mature and satisfying way. In the hands of a lesser director, this film could have left the audience feeling icky and like it only exists for "shock" value, instead it leaves the audience with conflicted feelings, and complicated ideas about the subject. At every turn director Mark Raso gets some fantastic performances out of his cast, and makes a pretty unlikeable lead character, sympathetic and compelling.
This is the kind of "romantic dramedy", I'd like to see more of, instead of the usual kind of issues we have to deal with. This "will they, won't they" has some serious implications to it, and ups the ante of the drama by forcing you to be invested in the relationship for reasons that have nothing to do with romance. It's a pretty brilliant script and it's handled so delicately and with intimate care for the characters, it's hard not to be invested yourself.
