Review of Copenhagen (2014) by Dan H — 15 Dec 2015
Equal parts coming-of-age story and unconventional romance. William (Gethin Anthony) is an immature lothario in his 20s is in Copenhagen searching for the grandfather he never met. It's going to take Effy (Frederikke Dahl Hansen), a 14 year old girl, to show him how to be a better man.
A fantastic film. Yes, a large part of the film is about a 20 something year old adult falling in love with a 14 year old girl. Yes, these parts are very awkward but also kind of sweet. I'm not going to lie, this is a beautiful film and it handles the relationship between our two leads carefully.
It's a film that is well aware that this love is illegal and frowned upon, and it does a good job at keeping one toe over the line. Our two leads do fantastic jobs. Gethin Anthony does a great job at being a dick in the beginning, and his journey into likable schmoe is a believable and compelling one.
Frederikke Dahl Hansen is also great as one of the coolest 14 year olds. I liked the couple's dynamic and how their roles kind of switched a bit as William starts to mature. Once again, I thought this film was fantastic and very well-done.
It doesn't really follow many of the beats you find in typical romantic films. I'd recommend it if you like your films a bit different from the rest.
