Review of Cop Land (1997) by Tom R — 22 Aug 2013
As a Stallone enthusiast/apologist I'm sorry that it took me so long to get around to watching what many consider to be his finest post Rocky/First Blood performance. Certainly, it's the biggest departure he has made in the last 20-30 years as an actor.
Whilst still being somewhat of the hero in the mostly masculine drama, the point of difference is in Stallone's portrayal. His character is a loser, a pushover and an under achiever. Even during his triumphant closing sequence, he still seems simple and naïve.
This is completely different to every single character portrayed by Stallone outside of Rocky Balboa in the first 2 and final Rocky films. In addition, the supporting cast is stellar, De Niro is subtle as a rare "good-guy" and Keitel is grarly.
Liotta also shows us why his career has been somewhat of a let down, he is a genuine force when up and running. Overall, it doesn't outrank the mob/cop legends like Goodfellas, Heat etc, but it certainly provides proof that Stallone is capable of playing someone other than a ass-kicking knucklehead.
