Review of Cop Land (1997) by Will E — 29 Apr 2012
Holy crap is this good. Had no idea. Heavy-duty cop drama with Sly in a terrific role as a shlumpy, half-deaf sheriff in a police community who can't seem to do anything right, so he goes home at night and listens to Springsteen's "Stolen Car" on vinyl.
Liotta is his sketchy buddy, Keitel you know is on the take, DeNiro yells at his agents to "Go to fuckin' lunch!" and half the cast of The Sopranos turn up bit parts--even Artie fucking Bucco! Then Ray Liotta versus the T1000 from T2! You like bad cops, bad guys, awesome opening car chases, Howard Shore's moody score, pretty decent suspense, manly dudes (including Cathy Moriarty) chewing up gritty NJ scenery? You can't beat this.
Check it if you liked LA CONFIDENTIAL, THE DEPARTED, HEAT, and the like.
