Review of Coonskin (1975) by Anthony I — 11 May 2014
The name alone is worthy enough to avoid. Make no mistake, this is the most racially provocative picture since "Birth of a Nation", and a million times more uncomfortable than "Do the Right Thing".
But what audiences don't realize is that this movie might be the strongest advocate of black acceptance in American society you'll ever see. Beneath all the disgusting images you'll have to look at, there is a beautiful message about the evils of racism and ignorance.
Ralph Bakshi certainly beat Spike Lee and Quentin Tarentino to the punch with this concept. I highly recommend seeing this movie, on bootleg or YouTube. There really is truly nothing like it.
