Review of Cool World (1992) by Joie'S Got A Cake — 30 Dec 2008
This is a very experimental film. Half real world, half cartoon (and then it's half silly, half dark). It has an odd combination of real objects, cartoons, and cardboard cutouts. It has a lot of problems with things just not flowing together, like real people looking past cartoon characters instead of at them, random cartoon things happening for no reason, some really weird plot transitions, etc.
You might think it's a kid movie if it weren't for all the adult stuff. It's really weird how it fluctuates from a adult to kid movie. One moments it's sex sex sex, the next they are replacing curse words with 'doodle'.
The cartoon artists are actually talented and the mish mash of every kind of drawing style is fun, but stuff just doesn't flow together. Oddly enough, Brad Pitts character seems the most fake thing in the movie.
And the rules of cool world are just so dang ridiculous. Well it get's points for being so different.
