Review of Cool World (1992) by Shannon M — 08 Dec 2010
I guess that one day, Ralph Bakshi saw "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" and thought to himself "You know, this could have been a great picture if it had been edgier and more trippy!" and then proceeded to make what would be his last animated feature.
And there's a good reason that this is his last-- it's just plain not enjoyable to watch. Some of the animation is actually quite decent, but in other parts it's very crudely drawn, and even if that was the intent it still lags quite pitifully behind Richard Williams' work on Roger Rabbit, despite having been made several years later.
Bakshi's work has always been a mixed bag, and there really isn't much to like here. However, it's at least worth checking out if you want some idea of what is going on inside Bakshi's head without venturing into his X-rated stuff.
