Review of Cool World (1992) by Ralph S — 06 Jun 2013
Convoluted mess that never lives up to the actors who star in it. Perhaps the only thing I really like about the movie is the background art and maybe the soundtrack that's it.
When you look at the lovely backgrounds that are shown in the movie you really wonder what this movie could have been. Shame..
Almost everyone's performance was ludicrously below standard especially Gabriel Byrne he looked especially confused in this distorted reality. And the cartoons, ahem Doodles are also no less rubbish, there seems to be little creativity in the 'Cool World' and so many cartoon characters are downright ugly uninspired space fillers.
There also seems to be only 3 classes of cartoons: First are the humanoids there are only 2 the first is Holli Would the second is Lonette (Brad Pitts squeeze) there are the most accurately created but more work has been done on Holli Would then Lonette. Then there are the goon types, dark cartoons there are quite a few of them but their often quite forgettable and non-interesting IMHO. An then there are the rest of them which are more or less just stupider versions of kids cartoons that are always trying to kill each other for no apparent reason.
The ending was probably the worst part and I suggest you see if only to ask the eternal question WHY???
I really see little creativity in this film apart from the above mention background art. There is little variation in the cartoon characters and at times its as if they are literally fillers to cover the empty scenes of this horribly mess.
