Review of Cool Runnings (1993) by Ryan V — 12 May 2012
Loosely based on a true story, Cool Runnings is about a crew of Jamaican misfits who form their country's first Olympic bobsledding team. The guys take on a former bobsledding champ (John Candy) as their coach, but they still have to face the slings and arrows of naysayers.
However, thanks to their plucky determination, the Jamaican bobsledding team eventually earns the respect of their competitors. Cool Runnings goes through every sports-movie cliche in the book, but it also contains affable humor, a moving tone, and a likable performance from Candy and the rest of the cast.
I was initally skeptical, but by the end of this movie I was pleasantly surprised.
