Starring: Glenn Close, Julianne Moore, Liv Tyler, Chris O'Donnell, Charles S. Dutton, Ned Beatty, and Patricia Neal.
Directed by Robert Altman.
Written by Anne Rapp.
Rated PG-13 (for the depiction of a violent act, and for sensuality).
Running time approximately 1 hour 58 minutes.
Robert Altman's delightful comedy/"murder" mystery Cookie's Fortune is a wonderful film. It makes ensemble pieces seem underrated (after the likes of Little Nicky, Mad Dog Time (I liked that one), etc.)...but then again, Altman's films are always ensemble pieces...and they're almost always good - or great! I loved Short Cuts, Gosford Park, and The Player, and enjoyed almost all of his other films. This one, though, is one of his very best. The performances are wonderful, Altman's direction superb, and you never really know where its headed. This is brillaint filmmaking! **** (out of ****) A.
