Altman had directed a straightforward adaptation of a John Grisham thriller and felt that he needed to direct his own version of a murder mystery set in a small town populated by eccentric characters. Charles S.
Dutton is arrested for murdering the town matriarch but one of the deputies (Ned Beatty) is a friend of his and tells the sherrif and state police investigator that he couldn't be a killer. Why? "Because I fish with him, thats why" Beatty's character replies.
You got a love a film with dialogue like that.
