Review of Conviction (2010) by Ana B — 03 Jan 2012
Drama based in true facts. A man, Kenny Waters, is wrongly convicted of killing a woman. His bewildered sister Betty Ann spent the next few years becoming a lawyer just to save her beloved sibling from life imprisonment. Against all odds, she fought the Establishment, the incomprehension of her husband and kids, the scepticism of friends and family members and the unwillingness of police and courts to correct an error that portrays them as an incompetent and bullying lot. This movie is proof that it takes just a person to make a difference in the system and in someoneâ(TM)s life. An uplifting real life fairy story of a notable woman determined to save his brother even at the cost of her own family life.
Perhaps cinematographically it is not such a remarkable film, but the story is so poignant that you might not even notice it.
Very good acting by the two main leads, Hilary Swank and Sam Rockwell, make this plot credible and give it an air of sincerity very difficult to accomplish in such extreme stories.
What the movie doesnâ(TM)t tell us is that Kenny died in an accident 6 months after his release in 2001. In a twist of fate he wouldnâ(TM)t have died had he remained in prison.
