A very effective case study of one woman's 16-year odyssey to free her brother for a murder he did not commit. Kenny Waters (Sam Rockwell) was arrested and convicted for the murder of a neighbor, Mrs.

Brow. His sister Betty Ann (Hilary Swank), convinced of his innocence, completes her GED, obtains her bachelor's degree, completes law school, and passes the Massachusetts bar exam for the express purpose of representing and exonerating her brother.

Using the leverage of Barry Scheck's Innocence Project, she and her best friend (Minnie Driver) locate missing evidence, obtain the recantation of the testimony of Kenny's ex-girlfriend that he confessed to the murder, and demonstrate that Kenny was framed by police officer Nancy Taylor.

A standard inspirational drama elevated by excellent performances by Swank, Rockwell, Driver, and Melissa Leo as Nancy Taylor.
