This is a cinematographic masterpiece, without question. I am tempted to say that in terms of visuals, this is one of the best films I have seen for quite awhile. Every single frame of the film is well-considered and executed from back to front and top to bottom. Good performance, good casting and a style which matches the tone of the music and scene.

When a film like this is made by people so close to the subject matter; written by Ian's estranged wife Deborah Curtis and directed by the band's photographer, it is hard to argue with the interpretation. However, as the film stands now, aside from commentary, it is easy to reach the conclusion that Ian's suicide was a result of romantic turmoil and not more directly related to his epilepsy or the medications he took as a result.

Sadly, this weakens the power of his life and music. However, the commentary and extra features go some ways to clearing this up, but the film would have been stronger if it these more existential factors were made more explicit.

Again, not much to offer someone who isn't a fan of Joy Division or the Manchester scene.
