Review of Control (2007) by Christian M — 06 Oct 2008
Every one of Anton Corbijns iconic and icy photographs come to life in this, his feature film directorial debut. Craig Parkinson (though model-pretty in real life... see the Fall 2008 Prada Menswear campaigns) aptly channels the post-punk nihilism and isolation felt by the talented but troubled Ian Curtis in a stirring performance that REALLY holds the viewer. Samantha Morton's hopefulness (which is wrung out into hopelessness) over her on-screen husband's battle against himself and his body would be excruciating if not for the very human undercurrent she gives the character of Mrs. Curtis.
The DVD has very worthwhile extra features making this a choice purchase for Joy Division - New Order fans. For all others, it's just a solid performance that is lensed gorgeously.
