Review of Control (2007) by Della K — 13 Sep 2010
This movie tells the story Ian Curtis who was lead singer of Joy Division, a punk rock band in the late 1970?s. I wasnt sure what to expect as I wasnt a great fan of Joy Division probably due to being so young when they were around. However, I was not disappointed.
The movie is shot in black and white and to be honest, colour would not do the film justice. Sam Riley give an exceptional performance and his portrayal of Ian Curtis was sensitive, moving, intelligent and empathetic. In addition to giving such an amazing performance, Riley sings and the actors who played the band members actually play their instruments in the live performances, which lends even more credibility to the film.
There were so many beautiful shots from this movie that I really felt like I was watching a piece of art. Obviously, the story of Ian Curtis is incredibly tragic and towards the end of the film I had to admit to shedding a tear or two. I would recommend this film for the script, direction and acting, whether you were/are a joy division fan or not!!
