Review of Control (2004) by Codie E — 09 Jan 2010
Deep, emotional and poetic. This is not a sentemental, heroic document of Joy Division but a seemingly truthful and unglamourous one. Riley is brilliant in the lead role and is surrounded by a quality cast.
But it is in the musical numbers where the film has true power, much like Curtis and the band themselves, everytime they stepped up on stage the hairs on my neck stood to attention. Stark, harrowing and poignant stuff.
However the film does seem to favour Curtis, refraining from showing any anger in him.
