Review of Contagion (2011) by Amorphous I — 06 Aug 2012
Like Traffic (another great movie by Steven Soderbergh), it's almost filmed more like a documentary than a dramatic-thriller movie (though it IS that; what's more, Traffic has a better score with slightly more interesting characters).
This movie is hard (medical) science-fiction, which means while fictional, it's grounded very much in reality and science, with a host of medical doctors and scientists as advisors as well as the cooperation of the CDC to ensure it is (mostly) accurate.
It's a gloomy subject with washed-out cinematography to maintain that mood. While there are protagonists and antagonists, they are not obvious. It's subtle. It's thoughtful. And it forces the viewer to think.
It's not for everyone, though everyone really should see it (if they can get in the mood to sit quietly and think, because the subject has real-world implications that could potentially affect everyone).
If you enjoy movies like Traffic but also enjoy documentaries like, say, PBS's NOVA, you'll certainly enjoy this.
