Not as much a movie but more of a training video to spread awareness, few might know that the deadly virus in the film is based on an already existing terrifying disease: the Nipah Virus, or NiV. No, the virus in Contagion is not fictional at all, and the events are about as dangerously close to reality as you could get if NiV entered the US.

NiV is spread in the exact same manner portrayed at the film's finale: bats contaminating food that other animals eat. Bats are the carriers of NiV, and many people in the Congo actually eat these bats and end up spreading disease. Watching this film with the understanding that the virus in it is already out there killing people might give you a bit of a different perspective.

Wash your hands, and stop touching your face. ;).

Oh, and stop eating bats.
