Review of Contact (1997) by Nagvendra S — 29 Nov 2010
Pretentious as hell. There's a lot of good moments, but the overarching religion vs. science theme completely hobbles the film. And the Zemeckis gimmicks, which worked in Forrest Gump, like inserting Bill Clinton into the movie, don't work here.
They're just annoying. Contact is amazing at some times, with the climax of Jodie visiting the Vega system definitely being the highlight, but the garbled rhetoric spouted from the actors' mouths demands notice and really takes away from the awe and thoughtfulness Contact is going for, and from what I believe Carl Sagan wanted us all to ponder.
