Review of Contact (1997) by Lorenzo S — 15 Mar 2011
Greatest film of all time. I get emotional each time I watch it. Jodie Foster gives the performance of her career, and Alan Silvestri's musical score is breathtaking. Ellie's journey is so emotional and personal, yet very accessible thanks to the excellent director Robert Zemeckis.
Her determination is fueled by the feelings of isolation, personal loss with no evident gain, and the longing to be loved again (though she might not mentally realize it). She has let herself become completely disconnected from the world, not physically but socially.
This is why she searches the skies; in search of something greater and in reality in search of her salvation. The most beautiful moment of the film is when she finds that salvation and then wants to share it with the world, only to discover that it will always be a part of her being and nothing more.
This, however, is a part of life. The journey of life is a personal experience and can't even be shared completely with the ones we love, though these feelings of love help build our stamina and in turn create a greater outlook towards life.
That's the message of the film: live life loved, but more importantly, live life and love it.
