Review of Contact (1997) by Rich C — 26 Jul 2011
This is a highly ambitious movie that feels like a massive achievement and a missed opportunity all at once. Zemeckis weaves many different genres and viewpoints into a film that feels like an epic by the time it's over.
The special effects are incredible, realistic, and always serve the story. The film masquerades as a movie supporting science but instead offers up both views of science and religion equally. This cheapens the effect of the film by appearing like a financial copout.
Still, I was very much involved in the second half and it is a unique and impressive film.
