Review of Contact (1997) by Becky M — 18 Apr 2012
Only time will reveal how brilliant (and possibly prescient) this movie is. No reviewer here observed that Carl Sagan created the most plausible scenario for "close encounters of the fourth kind." The communication in prime numbers, the instructions to build a machine for us to come to them versus the other way around, the travel via wormhole.
...all brilliant. But what really tops it off is the exposition of human folly, suspicion and superstition that follows....the congressional hearings, etc. This movie is more than science fiction. It's an incredible study in sociology and the sad state of the human race at this point.
The most unfortunate part of the movie is the hidden message buried within pi that they omitted. It "proved" it all. Freaking brilliant.
