Review of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) by Frog B — 24 Jan 2010
This is the first movie in the "Ape" series with none of the original characters in it, yet Roddy Mcdowell still manages to carry the tradition of playing a Chimp. Though, Mcdowell does not play Cornelius, instead he plays his son Caesar.
While this might seem corny, as they look and sound identical, Mcdowells talent manages to separate these characters into two very different individuals. As before, this film carries on the tradition of observing an implied subject.
This films critique is on slavery, while the films focus is not quite as focal as it was in the original, it still gets its points across. While this movie is probably the lesser known of the series it's still my favorite out of all the "Ape" movies.
It has good acting, good dialogue, and great action scenes. It's just fun to watch. My only real gripe with this movie is that it seems to end twice. It's as though the director couldn't quite make up his mind as to which direction to take the next film.
It's a bit of a shame because Mcdowell acts out this great piece dialogue that would take Caesar down a revolutionary path where basically, Apes would wipe the Human race off the face of the Earth.
Suddenly he has a complete change of heart simply because he's told its the "wrong thing to do", to which Mcdowell unleashes another great piece of dialogue in complete contrast as to how he felt minutes before.
I don't buy it. But other than that it's a great movie.
