Review of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) by Jake A — 14 Jul 2017
After the devastating and emotional ending of the last film we now follow the life of the son of the two main characters in that last film. The events detailed by Cornelius in the last film come true with cats and dogs dying out due to a disease and apes taking their place as pets and then eventually slaves.
This sets up the entire film and presents once again thoughtful social commentary not just on slavery and exploitation but also on there being a police state and willful use of violence. Roddy McDowall after previously playing as Cornelius now plays his son who eventually becomes known as Caesar and he is once again solid.
The rest of the cast mostly makes no impression however and the narrative is a bit rushed but the script offers plenty of ideas to ponder and the film is the most violent action packed film in the series so far.
The score is also decent and the ending once again is surprising in its commentary and in how it sets up the final act in the series.
