Most Planet of the Apes (except the 2nd movie and the horrible remake) take the story in a different direction. This one is no different. Conquest of the Planet of the Apes is much darker than the previous films (before editing, they wanted to give it an R rating).
McDowall is still good at getting emotion out of the heavy makeup, and the "fight for the rights of apes" was very appropriate for the time the movie came out.
