Review of Conquest of the Planet of the Apes (1972) by Dann M — 11 Jul 2014
As dark as a "G-rated" sci-fi series like 'Planet of the Apes' could sometimes be, the PG-rated 'Conquest' manages to be even darker, depicting a straight-up race war in the "futuristic" streets of '70s Century City.
Some of the set-up notions, like animal plagues and apes as pets, are a little goofy, but if you roll with it, the film delivers a tense, exciting conclusion -- albeit limited by its budget. Roddy McDowall's "Caesar" provides a good reason to keep the veteran actor around; his presence is not only welcome, but differs from his earlier character in the series.
