Review of Confessions of a Superhero (2007) by Kurtis D — 12 Feb 2008

I wanted to like this film more than I ended up actually liking it. Visually I thought it was one of the best documentaries I have seen. I really like the look and the cinematography, just look at the one sheet and you get an idea of what the film looks like.

The main "superheros" were fascinating people and I thought the premise of following this very unique cross-section of the strugging actor population was a very new and interesting one. The problem I had with it, is that it had nothing that drove the movie forward.

I actually almost turned it off at about 45 minutes, luckily it slightly redeemed itself in the end. Usually in a personality driven documentary like this, you follow the character or characters on some journey, and they through in more about their lives along the way in the form of interviews and stories.

The first almost hour of this film had no such "through story." It seemed like they realized this in the last 40 ish minutes and tried to push something on us. I am glad I watched it to see this perspective on actors trying to find their way in Hollywood.
