Review of Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002) by Angelo T — 29 Nov 2012
Television Producer by day, CIA operative by night? Whaaat? Normally I would reject such a plot, but it's allegedly the true story of Chuck Barris (creator of ''The Gong Show'' and ''The Dating Game'').
The screenplay by Charlie Kaufman was decent, but becomes incoherent by the end. The black comedy/spy thriller theme didn't click for me. Kaufman himself has made it known that he did not like the film, blaming debut director George Clooney for fucking up his script.
Clooney's directing style here, though, is so slick! And as for the lead performance by Sam Rockwell, wow! He inhabits the role so well. Supporting performances were equally as good. I dunno. Mixed feelings towards this one.
A shaky stamp of approval.
