Review of Concussion (2015) by Richard V — 27 May 2016
Based on the true story of Dr. Bennet Omalu, Concussion is an important tale that needs to be told. While it may seem like common sense to most people, the NFL continues to deny or hide evidence that CTE - which Dr.
Omalu discovered in several former football player and blew the whistle - even exists. But Dr. Omalu - played well by Will Smith - fought against a massive billion dollar corporation with powerful ties to government entities to reveal that NFL players suffering repeated blows to the head caused mental deterioration, emotional distress, and even suicide.
It's a conventional narrative, nothing unique in terms of filmmaking - a shame because this movie needs to be loud in certain aspects to hammer the point about CTE home - but it remains an incredibly important story for anyone who loves football, who plays football, or who encourages their children to play football.
