Review of Conan the Barbarian (1982) by Corey M — 05 Apr 2018
This is my favorite movie of all time. It's certainly one of the best ever made, and certainly very unique as well. Forget who is in the movie, see it for the art that it is, and you'll have a good time.
The movie is so unique because it's driven by music much more so than most films. It's basically an opera. The source material is highly respected by Milius as well. Most scenes in the movie can be traced back to a part of an original R.E. Howard Conan story. Many of the story elements Milius used are in 3 stories in the book anthology called "The Bloody Crown of King Conan.".
It will never be topped in this genre and the film is perfect. The only issue I have with it is the latter home releases of the film. The original US cut of the ending is much better in my opinion, I understand that some felt that the European ending made more sense for the plot, but it lacks the ambiance of the US version.
Arnold is at his absolute best here. He had to be in order to have the movie career he built on the success of this film. I consider it mostly a legitimate acting performance in that he did his job to absolute perfection. The role was made for Arnold, and he was made for it,.
