Review of Conan the Barbarian (1982) by Weirdassmedia — 17 Aug 2018
This is a great movie. It's slow and contemplative, relying mostly on build up and genuine credibility. Arnold, as limited as his acting ability is, is perfect for this role and gives the character what it needs: the aura and presence of the greatest warrior of a generation. He doesn't have to say anything, everyone can see and sense what he is. It really feels as we are watching Conan, not just some guy pretending to be him. Most of the other characters match this, and especially Valeria represents how compelled one gets to embrace what can be, when following this story.
It is this authenticity along with a fantastic score and beautiful scenes that will surprise most fans of the genre. Often regarded as a cheesy cult classic, there's instead an austere atmosphere that sets this movie apart, with most being shown rather than told. This is a quality that all great movies seek.
