Review of Compliance (2012) by Matthew L — 13 Apr 2013
The world learned of this case when it reached national news in 2004, but none could understand how or why it happened in the first place. The genius in Zobel's direction lies with his incredible ability to carefully nuance every detail in his actor's performances with inherent motivation or lack thereof in carrying out this horrific incident.
Zobel manages to make all of the characters "people," instead of the "monsters" they were previously relegated as by the media. Compliance allows this incident to elude its once mysterious personae, leaving the audience with the disturbing truth that what had seemed so impossible now seems all too probable.
