Review of Commando (1985) by Mark D — 13 Dec 2009
This is THE action movie. By some act of God, right as Arnold's career as an action superstar was beginning to pick up steam in the mid-80s, he met a filmmaking team that knew exactly how to build a movie around him, pushing everything to the extreme but never going too far, and maintaining a perfect balance between the absurd and the entertaining that borders on self-parody at times.
A quick 90-minute runtime keeps things moving, and the last half-hour becomes one long non-stop action scene of Arnold taking out an entire army. I mean that literally, there should be a kill-counter on the screen for the final act of this movie.
Plus the "badass" villain (played by Vernon Wells wearing a ridiculous chain mail vest) is a ridiculous adversary for the mass of muscle that is Arnold. Everything about this movie just clicks.
I might call it the ultimate 80s action movie, if only for its sheer entertainment value and the endless number of Arnold one-liners it contains. JENNY!!!
