Review of Commando (1985) by Debbie B — 15 May 2010
If there was a point in time when I was an Action Movie Virgin, Commando would be "my first." And because of that, I have an unbreakable bond with this movie and even Schwarzenegger himself. Well, now that's starting to sound creepy, so let's drop the analogy. I watched it on blu-ray for the first time in probably 10 or 15 years. It came back to me like a Bible story in Sunday School.
That being said, the digital remastering took away from the nostalgia for me. Everything is so visually sharp and crisp that it looks more like a home video than a Hollywood production. The camera pans and the action moves very slowly, and it all has the look of pre-postproduction quality. Real color, real lighting, real speed, real time. The only remnants from the 1980s experience were the corny one-liners and cheesier music.
I guess some things just can't be remastered.
