Review of Commando (1985) by David C — 01 Jul 2011
I must say that "Commando" is a stupid stupid movie.
In fact, most of these types of action movies are. They have so many dumb moments and stupid mistakes that you have no option than lauging about it. But what else can I say about "Commando"? It entertains.
Arnold Schwarzenegger stars as John Matrix, a former United States Army Colonel who lives with is daughter in the safety of his home. When a conspiracy of Valverde conutry begins and Matrix is betrayed by one of his friends, the bad guys kidnap his daughter and so Matrix goes away and does everything he can to rescue his daughter.
"Commando" is one of those movies that you know it's death stupid but yet you can't avoid keeping to watch. I watched this with a big group of friends and "Commando" is a perfect movie to do so. Every minute something dumb and/or ridiculous pops up and you do have so much to make fun.
I do believe this was made to be serious but, my god, some scenes are so over the top, so corny and so unintentionally hilarious that you have to laugh. In fact, most of this 80's movies ( and some more recent, actually) havr this, but most of them are just badly made. "Commando" is badly made but it's so badly made that it actually turns out to be a fun experience.
What can I say about the film? It's fucking Scwharzennger! The answer is obvious. How can such a performer like Arnold can be so entertaining? I don't know and I think it's better noto to find out. He plays a tough character with enough strenght to break door and windows just with is pinky finger and the movie makes Arnold having an emotional relationship with his daughter. It should be charming but instead it's hilarious. The other characters are so over the top, every killing, evry fight and every scene has this characteristics.
"Commando" simply works because of ho stupid it is. Every one liner, every exagerated death scene, every explosion, every shot of Arnold is stupid to the extreme. And that's why "Commando" is such a pleaseant experience.
