Review of Coming to America (1988) by Chase H — 01 Aug 2010
Why am I only giving this movie four stars instead of five? Because of the entire first twenty minutes of this film. Absolutely useless.
However, if you have it in you to make it past that point (or if you have a DVD and you can just skip through it), the rest of this movie is comedic genius. Every barbershop scene is so classic and hilarious. Too bad it spawned virtually every horrible "Barbershop" movie we have today.
I think my favorite scenes have to be Eddie Murphy just interacting with New York City, though. Who can forget such classic lines as "What does "dumb f*** mean?" Or "YES! F*** YOU TOO!" This was Eddie Murphy when he was absolutely brilliant. Too bad he's never managed to tap the comedic genius of the best parts of this film and instead, stuck to all the mediocre crap of the opening of the movie.
This may be the only good thing Aresenio Hall ever did but in the end, at least he did it.
